Fast track pathway

CFP fast track pathway in India

One exam instead of four. For professionals already working in the industry.

Exams

One final exam

Specialist exams

Exempted

Typical duration

Around six months

Experience needed

Three years in financial services

Awarded by

FPSB India

Same CFP charter as the regular pathway. IIFC is an authorised education provider.

What the fast track actually skips

The regular pathway asks you to clear three specialist exams before the final. The fast track exempts you from all three, on the basis that your qualifications and industry experience already cover that ground.

What remains is document verification with FPSB India, registration, the mandatory Psychology in Financial Planning module, and then the Integrated Financial Planning exam itself. That is why it runs around six months instead of a year.

The charter at the end is identical. There is no lesser version of CFP certification, and nothing on it says which route you took.

Do you qualify

Two conditions, and you need both. A recognised qualification, and three years of relevant work experience. Final eligibility follows FPSB India criteria and is verified against your documents before you pay anything.

One: a recognised qualification

Postgraduate or MBA in finance

Or PGDM in finance or a related stream, from a UGC or AICTE approved institution.

CA (Inter) with articleship

Held alongside a B.Com.

CFA (USA) or CPA (USA)

Either charter is recognised.

CMA, CS, ICWA or ACCA

Any of these professional qualifications.

CAIIB

The Indian Institute of Banking and Finance qualification.

Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India

Life or general.

Two: three years of relevant experience

Time served at any of the following counts towards the requirement.

Banks and NBFCs

Including brokerage, securities firms and portfolio managers.

Mutual fund and asset management

Fund houses and distribution.

Insurance

Life or general, on the advisory or planning side.

Registered investment advisers

As a person associated with investment advice.

Corporate treasury

The treasury division of a registered business.

Teaching finance

Lecturing in economics, commerce or finance at an academic institution, capped at three years and not combinable with work experience.

Self employed? Three years in financial intermediation, distribution or advisory counts, whether as a proprietor, an individual firm, a partnership or an LLP. Two of those three years can be general financial planning work. The final year needs experience across two or more areas, such as cash flow management, investment planning, risk and insurance, tax optimisation, retirement planning or estate planning.

What FPSB will ask you for

Documentation

For employed candidates, certification from your HR department, plus appointment and relief letters where the three years span more than one employer. For self employed candidates, incorporation documents, registration data such as your ARN, IRDA licence or Retirement Adviser certificate, and commission statements or income tax returns covering the period. We go through the list with you on the call so nothing is missing when you submit.

Your six step route

Two fewer steps than the regular pathway, because the three specialist exams come out.

Verify your documents with FPSB India

Step one

Qualification certificates and proof of three years of relevant experience. This is the step that confirms your exemption, so it comes first.

Register with FPSB India and buy the e-books

Step two

Registration and course material for the Integrated Financial Planning module.

Complete the Psychology in Financial Planning course

Step three

Mandatory and self-paced through the FPSB portal. On the fast track it must be finished before you can register for the final exam.

Sit the Integrated Financial Planning exam

Step four

Three hours across two sections, computer based, taken online proctored or at a DEXIT test centre.

Complete the financial plan assessment

Step five

The exam and the plan assessment can be taken in either order, within six months of paying the bundle fee.

Receive your CFP charter

Awarded by FPSB

The same certification as the regular pathway, recognised across 29 territories worldwide.

The one exam that matters

Everything on this pathway points at the Integrated Financial Planning paper. It is the same final exam regular pathway candidates sit, and it is where the whole framework comes together.

Three hours, two sections

Multiple choice with four answer choices per question, computer based.

Covers the full framework

Financial planning principles, process and skills, then integrated planning across a real client scenario.

Sit from home or a centre

Online proctored through the Mettle platform, or in person at DEXIT test centres across India.

Tools permitted

Financial calculators are allowed with data cleared, and spreadsheet software is available on screen.

Plus a financial plan assessment

Bundled with the exam fee. Either can be taken first, within six months of payment.

Three year window

FPSB India allows three years from enrolment. Most fast track candidates finish in around six months.

How IIFC prepares you for the final

A condensed programme built around a working week, aimed squarely at the final exam. FPSB charges are paid to FPSB India separately.

Live classes with Harminder Garg, CFP

Built around a working week

Scheduled for people holding down a full time role in banking, insurance or wealth.

Session recordings

A missed class is not a missed module. Every session stays available.

Focused on the integrated final

Case based practice on the paper you will actually sit, rather than ground you already cover at work.

Document verification support

We check your qualification and experience evidence before you submit it to FPSB.

Discount coupons worth Rs 16,250

Included rather than added on afterwards.

Harminder Garg, CFP

Your instructor, every class

He took the challenge status route himself, clearing it in A grade in 2007, then went on to work as manager of knowledge management at FPSB India. Before that, branch manager at ICICI Bank running HNI relationships. If you are coming in from the industry, he has done exactly what you are about to do.

Rs 1 to 1.5 lakh

IIFC coaching fee range across both pathways, including discount coupons worth Rs 16,250

There are two costs and it helps to see them apart. The first is coaching, paid to IIFC. The second is FPSB India’s own charges, which on the fast track cover document verification, registration and material, the psychology course and the final assessment bundle. Those are set by FPSB and paid to FPSB.

The fast track carries fewer FPSB charges than the regular pathway, because you are not paying for three sets of specialist material, three exam attempts and the specialist certification. We give you both figures on your call.

Where it takes you

You already do the work. The charter is what makes it legible to everyone else.

Why experienced advisers certify

Most people on this pathway are already advising clients. What they lack is not capability, it is a credential their employer, their compliance team and their clients all recognise on sight.

That matters more each year. Wealth firms increasingly list CFP certification on senior advisory roles, and clients ask about it directly. Certification also opens the fiduciary conversation, which is difficult to have credibly without it.

IIFC alumni hold senior positions at HDFC Bank, IDFC FIRST Bank, SBI MF, Franklin Templeton, Nippon AMC, Axis Bank, ICICI Securities and Centrum Wealth. Most came in from the industry, on this route.

Questions from experienced professionals

Who is eligible for the CFP fast track pathway?

The CFP fast track pathway requires both a recognised qualification and three years of relevant experience. Qualifying credentials include a postgraduate degree or MBA in finance from a UGC or AICTE approved institution, CA (Inter) with articleship alongside B.Com, CFA (USA), CPA (USA), CMA, CS, ICWA, ACCA, CAIIB, or Fellow of the Insurance Institute of India. Experience must be in banking, NBFCs, mutual funds, insurance, securities, portfolio management, brokerage, registered investment advisory or corporate treasury.

How is the fast track different from the regular pathway?

The CFP fast track pathway exempts you from the three FPSB specialist exams, so you go directly to the Integrated Financial Planning final after registering and completing the psychology module. The regular pathway requires all three specialist exams first. Both routes award the identical CFP charter.

How long does the CFP fast track take?

Most CFP fast track candidates finish in around six months. FPSB India allows three years from enrolment to complete all education and exams, so there is room if work gets busy.

Does my self employed experience count?

Yes. Three years in financial intermediation, distribution or advisory counts whether you operate as a proprietor, an individual firm, a partnership or an LLP. Two of those years can be general financial planning work, while the final year needs experience across two or more areas such as cash flow management, investment planning, risk and insurance, tax optimisation, retirement planning or estate planning.

What documents does FPSB ask for?

Employed candidates need certification from their HR department, plus appointment and relief letters if the three years span more than one employer. Self employed candidates need incorporation documents, registration data such as an ARN, IRDA licence or Retirement Adviser certificate, and commission statements or income tax returns covering the period. IIFC checks the set with you before you submit.

Is the fast track CFP charter the same certification?

Yes. The CFP charter awarded through the fast track pathway is identical to the one awarded through the regular pathway. Nothing on the certification indicates which route you took, and it carries the same recognition across 29 territories worldwide.

What is the Integrated Financial Planning exam like?

The Integrated Financial Planning exam runs three hours across two sections, multiple choice with four answer choices per question. It is computer based and can be sat online proctored through the Mettle platform or in person at a DEXIT test centre. Financial calculators and on screen spreadsheet software are permitted.

How much does the CFP fast track cost at IIFC?

IIFC coaching costs approximately Rs 1 lakh to Rs 1.5 lakh across both pathways, including discount coupons worth Rs 16,250. FPSB India charges separately for document verification, registration and material, the psychology course and the final assessment bundle. The fast track carries fewer FPSB charges than the regular pathway because the three specialist exams and their material are not required.

Can I study while working full time?

Last reviewed August 2026. Eligibility follows FPSB India criteria and is verified against your documents on your counselling call.
